There Is No Magic Bullet

Eat Healthy

The dream of every person who ever wanted to lose weight was to have a magic pill or bullet. Mind you, I can’t imagine having to shoot myself to lose weight but if there WAS a magic bullet I probably would do it.

The world is full of sound bites (Hmm, I wonder if they have calories, too?) and homilies about getting healthy or losing weight. Just Google weight loss cartoons. There are thousands!

I have tried almost every diet invented until 3 years ago. I discovered that it isn’t what diet I was on, it was what I was eating and how much of it in a day. Yep, I was in control of my eating, weight loss (or gain) and my health. CrapAnd when I eat healthy food, walk everyday, drink all the water I’m supposed to have and sleep at least 7 hours, guess what? I feel healthier, lose weight and my mind works way better. Everybody has some sort of stress in their lives. Some is horrible and overwhelming, some is normal daily stuff and some is “make-yourself-healthier stress”.

“Wha???” you say. Yes, good for us, “make-yourself-healthier stress”.  So what is “make-yourself-healthier stress”? It is working out to where you can feel it. It is walking that little bit farther. It is taking the time at the end of your long work day to cook a healthy meal from scratch. It is going that extra mile for the good produce and best meat. All those things are a stress in your life but they make your life better. Stress is something we have to learn to manage. Bad health is extremely stressful, not just for you, but for your family, too. It turns out we’re used to stress and for us dysfunctional people, if we don’t have the familiar stresses we look for them so I’m going to replace the bad stresses with make-myself-healthier stresses and as these stresses become habit they will make me healthier along with them!
