Broken Tooth – Message?

I was just sitting watching TV Friday night, drinking my 20 oz. mug of ice water when I felt my back tooth. It felt funny like something was stuck to it. You know when a tooth doesn’t feel right your tongue keeps going there. I touched it with my finger and it felt like the edge of something so I tried to peel it off and a big chunk of my very back, upper, right molar came off! Holy crap! It was a really big chunk which meant that I now had a big, sharp hole in my tooth. Yep, my tongue was going to go there all the time and test it out. Food would get stuck in it. I would have to wait until next week to see a dentist and God knows what would hide in that huge hole.

veg-03I like my dentist. She’s so nice and is always worried that she’s hurting me. She kept apologizing the whole procedure of a two-hour root canal that needed to be repeated because I have double nerves in the roots in my teeth.  Then she puts her cool hand against your cheek and it feels really nice. I like a caring dentist not the know-it-all ones that are younger than your kids. So, I called her office Monday morning and hoped she could see me and get the tooth fixed. Wednesday!

I don’t mind dentists and most procedures, but I don’t rush in every 2-6 months for check-up and/or cleaning, so it had been a while since I saw her last, two years actually. I even had a new insurance company. I had a nice but short talk with her and we discussed options. What kind of fix do I want? Do I want a new fancy filling? I got one to repair a similar break and it’s still there 10 years later and feels great. Then there’s the crown. I have two and they are so pretty and soooo expensive. They are not all covered by my dental plan. And, how about having it pulled? It’s a back molar, there’s no wisdom tooth on that side, there never was (I am evolutionarily advanced). And I understand that lots of models have their very back molars removed for that hollow cheek waif look. I don’t think the rest of my body could do the waif look. Are there any obese waifs? katemosswanted

Well, it turns out what felt like the grand canyon in my mouth wasn’t that bad and I got nice new all-white filling. I had eaten very carefully all weekend so I wouldn’t get food stuck in there or overload the hole in my tooth with cavity-creating sweets. It is actually how I should (yes, I should on myself!!!!) be eating. And there it was, staring me the newspaper this morning. My horoscope. It says it all. Just when I think I’m in control, fate slaps me in the face and reality is back. Okay, I can deal with reality…sort of…

Well,I’m taking my 20 oz. mug of ice water out onto the deck along with a small bowl of cherry-sized, yellow plums and enjoy the summer. I’m sure that’s where the universe wants me now that my tooth is fixed.

  1. The best way to avoid root canals is to take good daily care of your teeth to prevent the growth and spread of bacteria. Brushing and flossing are important. Just as important are regular trips to the dentist, to check for the first sign of decay or cracks that could eventually lead to an infected tooth.
