Dr Oz Says We Can Dine and DASH!

I was watching Dr. Oz the other day and he was promoting the #1 diet in the US – The DASH Diet has won this honour three years in a row. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Hmmmm. It sounds very healthy and useful.

The DASH Diet Pyramid

The seven-day DASH plan is simple and you probably have all the foods in your house. It is based on the American Food Pyramid and is very close to the Canada Food Guide.

It’s all common sense if you understand the basics of nutrition and if you follow it, your blood pressure will be good, your blood sugar will be normal (unless you have Type 1 diabetes) and you will maintain your weight. Hmmm, sounds simple doesn’t it.

Why don’t we see this diet on the front of the “National Inquirer” or “O” or “Women’s Weekly”? Because it’s too easy. Because no one is making money off it. Because the celebrities that are using it have common sense and that’s no fun in a headline!

spong bobIf you really look at it, we can truly eat a lot of food – good food! We could be teaching this to our children as soon as they eat solid food. Every cafeteria in a school can use this. We can teach it in school from K to 12! Oh wait… the fast food and snack food industry will lose money and they are multi-billion dollar businesses. If we took it all away from this industry  governments would probably outlaw it.

Imagine if people were brought up understanding and eating a healthy diet in portions correct for their age, body and gender. Wow! Even the health industry would suffer. There would be no obesity and it’s side effects. No need for dietitians, less need for doctors to spend time on all the side affects of unhealthy foods. We wouldn’t even need vitamins, food supplements or diet aids. We would all be healthier. Throw in an hour of moderate activity and that would be the icing on the cake. Sorry, poor choice of metaphor.

What a thought. I’m going to DASH dine! Thanks for listening. ;D Diane
