Can Crazy Help Me Lose Weight?

I read a great article by Ron Merk on the Weight Loss Surgery Support Facebook page. It had a strange title and picture but they grabbed my attention as I felt I would probably relate. I did. It was called “Crazy People Can Lose Weight, Too”. Now that’s a title.

It talks about how people with an SMI (serious mental illness) could lose weight with behaviour modification, counselling and group exercise. But (and there’s always a but) weight loss did not happen immediately but over a period of time. Hmmmm. And to quote the article, “This finding suggests that despite substantial challenges, persons with serious mental illness are able to lose weight with a tailored intervention.”

I’m not Capital SMI. I’m more like how Ron put it, smi (slightly mentally ill), but aren’t we all a little crazy. I can’t use all my foibles to blame my lack of success on. I love that word “foibles”and don’t use it enough, maybe I’ll make it my word of the week as we head into another holiday weekend.

So whether I’m folding the empty chip bags into tiny squares to throw away (OCD) or sitting in a mini blue funk (depression), or working through one of my alter egos (multiple personality disorder), I can still lose weight if I tailor my program to myself and not take one out of a box.

Thanks for listening. D: Diane
