Fat Burning – Myth or Real?

Of course it’s mostly water!

Once again, as I ponder the incredibly not-shrinking woman, I scour the internet for the magic bullet/potion/regimen/guru that will melt the fat from my body. Short of a nuclear explosion, I don’t think that is possible. Are melting and burning the same thing? No. But the chemical concept is similar. Burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. Which weight will you lose? That depends on what you are doing besides not eating. if you are exercising, even a little bit, you will burn more calories and build muscle that means your fat reserves will give you that extra burnable energy (calories of fat).

My Sparkspeople email today asks if my “Fat Burning Furnace if Fired Up or Fizzling Out?” Duh! I don’t have a furnace right now. I have a candle, a tea light really. There are wonderful points and info in this article but all comes back to eat less – exercise more. Cardio is so good for you. Even weight loss surgery (WLS) will not kick your metabolism up a notch. WLS only limits your calorie intake. YOU still have to burn some of the calories conveniently packed some where on your body.

I actually have a very efficient metabolism. It takes just a few calories to run my body so it saves all the extras (anything over 1200 a day) and packs into fat cells for future use. For example, if we have a stunning famine in North America I will live a long time on almost nothing. The problem is, here in North America, we have a plethora of food specially developed to make us want more of it.

“What?” you say. Yes, huge food-related corporations have developed flavours, odours, and colours specifically to entrance us and make us want them. They have done the market research about what turns our taste buds and brains on! For example, bacon. Bacon is the hot flavour right now. Bacon has no nutritional value as it is 99% fat – bad cholesterol-ridden fat. But we have been told by TV, radio, magazines, food outlets that bacon is fun and delicious. You can now get it in: ice cream, popcorn, any kind of sandwich (Try peanut butter and bacon, it’s actually quite good.), covered in chocolate etc. Every fast food restaurant has it some form even SALADS!!!! Caramelized onions are so passe’ .

Bacon and onions aside; fat burning is not a myth. You can burn fat and build muscle. Your fat cells will stay with you forever (unless you get them vacuumed out which only leaves the ones you keep to get bigger). But you can control what you eat. YOU can control how much you eat. YOU CAN exercise! YOU CAN DO IT! And so can I.

Not MY fat-burning furnace! Yet!

I’m off to the living room to burn some calories, away from the bacon marmalade in the fridge.
