Road Trip – Day 1

Yesterday, Norm and I started a mini-road trip. It has been difficult since I have to use a walker and mobility is a big issue. But, driving and seeing the world isn’t. So, to celebrate or 35th wedding anniversary, we decided to get off the island.  Don’t get me wrong. I love living on Vancouver island and can’t imagine not being near the ocean but every once in awhile, I want to drive somewhere else.

Norm and I love road trips. We decide on a time length for our trip (this one will be 4 days), pick a ferry (One of the joys of living on an island), and a general direction (north, south, or east. West would put us on the ocean and that would be a cruise). We don’t usually make reservations for anything but since this is a long weekend in Canada (Victoria Day) I made 1 reservation – for a ferry.  There are 4 available: regular BC Ferry to the lower mainland, TSAWWASEN; the Sidney-Anacortes to the states; the Nanaimo Ferry to Horseshoe Bay  on the mainland; and the Coho to Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I made a reservation for the 10:30 am on the Coho. We had a time, a ferry and general direction- south.

The Coho in VictoriaWe had to be  at the ferry 90 minutes early because of security and customs. We were entering a very protective country but we were not bringing anything dangerous into the US like explosives, marijuana or fruit. There is no elevator in the Coho so It took me awhile to get up the stairs to passenger deck but I did it. (Thank you cane!) And we were off.

We decided to turn left when we got off the ferry and do the east side of the Olympic Peninsula since we hadn’t done that before and we would get gas (a bit cheaper in the states) then look for somewhere to eat. Hooray for IHOP (International House of Pancakes)! We don’t have one in Victoria so it was a treat. I had a scramble with one piece of rye toast but Norm went all out and did the steak eggs, hashbrowns and pancakes with blueberry syrup. I get full just writing about it.

One of the things we wanted to do was casinos, so we managed to hit two of them. The first one was the Lucky Dog Casino. Luck? Not so much. I also forgot about all the smoke. No smoking is allowed in Canadian Casinos. So we stated to look for a hotel for the night and thought maybe the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel would work. The only rooms available were big suites for outrageous prices (we are notoriously cheap). But, we went to the casino. It was much bigger. My money lasted a little longer and the air filtration was way better! Luck? Not so much.

Off we drove and missed Olympia but the roads and countrysides were wonderful. We stopped for the night in Elma Washington. Nice hotel, they even had free popcorn in the lobby for us. We were pretty tired and really didn’t feel like going out again so we had muffins and apples. I had juice and Norm had the first of many American beers.

Today is the 21st of May and We have now been married for 35 years and they keep getting better. We’re off to Portland, Oregon today, it isn’t that far and there’s no sales tax in Oregon so I WILL be shopping. I only brought 1 pair of pants and two tops and we’re planning on 4 days so I have to buy new clothes!

Thanks for listening! ;D Diane
