Dance Walking – A New Fitness Routine with Ben Aaron!

A friend posted this on her Facebook page and I love it. This iBen Aaron from NBC.

It’s called Dance Walking. I can’t do it right now but I will be doing it as soon as I get my OK from the Dr. I’ve said it before,  Dancing is great aerobic exercise. You can do it. The only hold back I can see is shyness. But if you get a group together and do it like flash mob…who can say how many people will get great exercise, burn off bad fat, enjoy themselves, laugh and love life.

There are quite a few links in this post. I’ve tried to make them bright, bold and they should (yes, I’m shoulding on them) open in new windows. Theoretically you just need to click on them. Enjoy!

Besides shyness, it may be difficult to pick out the right tune to Dance Walk to. What music moves you? Venga Boys? Olivia Newton John? Maybe Billy Rae Cyrus (who doesn’t love a good mullet?) You can actually get really good exercise CD’s and, let’s be honest, Richard Simmons and Sweatin’ is classic! I actually have a CD full of mp3’s, close to 100 tunes, just for driving. So why not entire MP3 playlists for Dance Walking?

I think the reason I like this exercise is that there are no set step routines. I have a terrible sequential memory. I believe it’s a learning disability (so do my students, it makes math and spelling very difficult, phone numbers are a challenge, too. But Back to Dance Walking.) Even yoga was hard for me except for the poses; cat, dog, and child! Jazzercize? I always seemed to be the salmon swimming against the current. Even if I have a limp, it won’t matter. I would get to dance any way I want to. I like the concept of control over how I move my body! Maybe that’s what I liked about disco back in the day.

Then there is the “Insanity” factor. We’ve all seen them. The people bopping their heads to the silent music of the IPod. We see them in cars, on buses, riding their bikes and, yes, walking. Think of all the fitness if they were Dance Walking!!!! We do think they are crazy and have no idea how silly they look. There is definitely not enough whimsy in the world.

I think that having a mobility issue is prompting strange thoughts and Dance Walking is a great one for someone designated with a disability. Love it, hate it, it can get your juices flowing. I love car dancing, just watch Wayne’s World and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody will have you head-banging, too.

So, thanks for listening and Dance Walk on! ;D Diane
