I Want To Dance With Abandon!

I remember when it was all about making it to Saturday so we could go dancing. When I was in university I worked at this store called Capital Iron and met my future husband, Norm, there and my life-long friends. But it was all about living life back then. My biggest worry was a mark on a paper due on Monday. Now, I worked every Thursday and Friday night ’til 9 and still had to be at work Saturday morning by 9. Back in those days we had Sundays off. We all did.Thursday nights were girls night at the Sherwood. Friday night was close the pub. Sunday nights were movies. But it was Saturday that was so amazing. We went dancing. Yes, they were disco days but we could find everything from old-time rock and roll to heavy metal. But we danced every weekend.  Norm was the one who taught me how to really dance. He taught me waltzing, jive, cha-cha, he even taught me polka. I truly believe the reason I didn’t gain any more weight back then was all the exercise that dancing gives you. Draught beer was only .$25 and highballs were $1.50. Sigh. Of course that was BC (Before Children).

I love dancing but haven’t been able to do much in last 10 years due my disintegrating hips. When they finally got replaced and I recouped, we went to the Timebenders – music from the ’50’s to the ’80s. I danced and danced. It was glorious. I even got to the point where I was doing my house work to very loud music and dancing the whole time. 9 Inch Nails, Michael Jackson, Flo Rida – it didn’t matter. Give me a beat and I’ll bounce. It was/is the best of everything for exercise! Think about it.

Zumba, Jazzercise, Belly Dancing, Hip Hop, Dancing to the Oldies: all are spectacular for exercising and losing or maintaining weight. Jazzercise was founded by Judi Sheppard Misset in 1969. That’s a long time ago. The fact that dance is good for you is truly the only way to get some men to participate in Ballroom Dancing and look what it did for Kirstie Alley!

I want to dance again. Right now I do mean “Hand Jive”.

I want to dance with abandon like William!

Thanks for listening. ;D Diane Kirby
