My Glutes Hurt!
I started The Biggest Winner today and felt down right terrified! I was in my black yoga pants; bright yellow QOM QOM Fitness t-shirt (so I wouldn’t be noticed); my water bottle with the room temperature water and slices of fresh ginger in it; and Saucony runners. 3 of 4 in our group had new Saucony runners. Am I trendy but didn’t know it???? Oh, the irony! I was also the oldest and heaviest in our group.
Our fitness leader is Dana! Yea! for Dana! I met her a couple of years ago when I took up the bokken (a Japanese wooden sword) in the Zen Warrior class. I loved the exercise and all the Katas where I got to chop off people’s arms and heads and yell in a terrifying manner. Well, I didn’t really get to chop anything off but I got to move like I did and it was great. Sword fighting is still on my Life List.
Anyways, because I have high blood pressure, artificial hips, an “apple ” shape and Dana felt sorry for me, I got use a very large exercise ball to do some of the exercises on. It seems apples have a difficult time bending over really far to do exercises because their bodies cut their air off. Who knew?
I did a whole bunch of exercises and hardly noticed the 15-year-old boys; the svelte 20 somethings (men and women) with very expensive ear buds in; the elderly man in a button front shirt weighing himself or myself in the mirrors. So many mirrors.
So, here I am, resting my sensitive glutes and telling you I started. It felt great and the other women in my group (there are 8 groups) are fantastic! I’m going to have fun and reap the benefits of commitment (easy to say after session 1 with 19 more to go). I’ve been weighed and measured and found wonderful. Thanks for listening, I need a drink!
Water! Really! Just water!
;D Diane
Good for you Diane. Taking the first step is always the hardest thing.
I didn’t know about that apple-shape body issue you mentioned. I mean I KNEW I couldn’t breathe, but didn’t ever encounter a fitness instructor who understood that. Thanks for including this in your blog.
Congrats on your first exercise session! Keep on keepin’ on!

Wow,I am surprised too that someone who is not an “apple” knows we cannot breathe when we bend down! She must be a good teacher then, good for you!
Dana has 2 black belts, is a certified fitness instructor and a certified nutritionist. She is great, encouraging, adaptive and so understanding. Thanks! Oh, by the way, she’s a pear.
