Indulging Yourself on the Road

I was away from home for three days this week with my boss, Kendra, for some training on assessment.  Great hours from 10 to 4.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all have these hours if you HAVE to work?  I know Kendra will be voting for it. But because we were away from home, travelling and staying in a hotel…we broke our eating patterns. Yep, I know we all do it because most restaurants and 7-11s do not stock our everyday healthy foods. And you can’t take fruit and veggies over the border!

So do foods you eat in the car have fewer calories?  I don’t mean fast food. We ALL know that fast food is bad for us. Right? I mean the bag of snacks you take on a trip: chocolate bars, chips, beef jerky, pop, bag-o-cookies etc.  Then there are the restaurants you eat in. Because you are away from home you indulge in food you normally would not eat. Crossing 4 states this summer based on biscuits and gravy was part of the experience.  We used to look for hotels with pools now we look for breakfast and internet.  And we are even getting more picky about the breakfasts. We look for waffles made in the flippy-over waffle maker. I haven’t made waffles from scratch for more than 2 years now.

I stayed in a hotel that had suites, the bedroom, bathroom, living room with eating area and a full kitchen! So it was off to the store for snacks. Together we got  juice (no sugar added but not really mow calorie), organic microwave popcorn (but butter flavour), Pringles (whole grain but cheese), Spitz (sunflower seeds – dill flavour), hot chocolate mix and flavoured water. Sigh, all the comforts of home but away from home. The hotel did have a continental breakfast; two types of cold cereal, two types of bagels, toast, fruit, croissants and all the butter, jam, peanut butter and jam you want.  There was also pretty good coffee. Sigh.  I was awake before our training each day!

Then there was the eating out. Lunch was pho soup, healthy enough but supper was an adventure. It was wing night in the pub/disco – we thought it was more of a bar/bistro but, no…. So,with a nice fruity beer (Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc), I order 10 jerk wings ($3.50) and a pulled pork poutine (fantastic!).  So much food!!! I didn’t even get half way through but I never would have had this during a normal week living at home.  So we took our leftovers back to the hotel and put them in the fridge. I did have a bit of the poutine for breakfast.  MMMMM! Then we had lunch at the New Mitzie’s – Chinese and other fare. I love tables with turntables built-in. I had pepper beef chow mien.  Once again I could not get through even a third of this dish so I  (and Kendra, too) had to take the leftovers back to the hotel. We didn’t even go out for supper that night.  I had popcorn, juice, poutine and chow mein. Oh, and a couple of wings, my lips still hurt. Groan!!!! So much food but it was over a few hours relaxing on the couch and watching TV.  These are all things we don’t do at home because we are trying to lead healthy lifestyles. Oh well.  This is one of the reasons we take vacations and don’t mind too much being out-of-town for conferences or what ever.

Enough excuses for over eating.  I’m home now and back watching my intake and output.  My knee is feeling much better so maybe a bit if a walk today? What do you take with you for a road trip? What is your guilty food fantasies when you are out-of-town?? Do you pack a wine bottle opener in your luggage?

Thanks for listening. ;D Diane
