A Little Red Whine – Gym Rompers!

Well, it’s Tuesday night and a hockey game will be starting in a few minutes.  I’m not big on hockey. It is my favourite sport to watch but: a) I don’t skate, b) We do not have an NHL team in Victoria so it’s so expensive to see the Canucks in Vancouver, c) I’m not in the work hockey pool this year and d) What kind of name is Canucks????

It is the Canadian national sport. I wish I was sporty – not Sporty Spice but athletic.

I do not have the gumption to be athletic.  I had athleticism for one and a half years and only one and half years -January 1971 – June 1972.  I got the highest mark in PE in Grade 11 in Inuvik. Me, a 200 pound white girl. I think it was because I was the only one in class to wear shorts.  We had the Canadian Fitness test back in those days.  I got a silver – so did my brother, Dave, the athletic one.  I was one mark over the lowest mark for silver and he was one mark under the highest mark.  He got gold the next year  – not me.  I did play inter-mural basketball, volleyball, badminton and ran in the grade 12 relay team.  We won that year and I HATE running!  I also chaired the School Athletic Committee and started a store to raise money to go to Yellowknife for the Canada Northern Games.  We were really healthy and sold: pop, chips and chocolate bars. Sigh, the good old days!

The reason I’m waxing poetic about athleticism is that I’ve had a nice glass of merlot and reflected that the only extra exercise (extracise!) I’ve had this week is walking. Walking is good but I’m on the verge of “shoulding” on myself!

No more! I wore a gym suit!  I played volleyball!  I had fun in school!  I am getting thinner!!!!  I am NOT Molly Ringwald…       Thanks for listening.;D Diane

  1. Hockey? is that the game where they chase that little black speck around on the ice with sticks? Do they ride brooms?

  2. No, but it is hit to pass like a Demolition Car Race.
